Softdisc is a disposable, single-use menstrual disc that can be worn safely for up to 12 hours. R&D—the first menstrual disc, and what would later become “Instead,” was first introduced to the market in 1994 by Audrey Contente at Ultrafem, Inc. In 1998, the product was acquired by Evofem. They repackaged and rebranded the product to be called “Instead Softcup,” and soon was discontinued. The Flex Company discovered it and decided to acquire the brand and ramp up operations of Softcup to ensure that more women will have access to menstrual discs. The Flex Company introduces new packaging and changes the name of the product from “Instead Softcup” to “Softcup.” In 2018, they renamed Softcup to “Softdisc” to help distinguish the menstrual disc from other menstrual products on the market.
